Ghandi Peace Float

Come and help Berkeley celebrate itself in one of the most
colorful, irreverent, and fun events on the west coast. The
seventh annual "How Berkeley Can You Be?" Parade
kicks off on Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. It starts
at the corner of California and University Avenue and proceeds
up University Avenue to Shattuck, turns right on Shattuck
to Center Street and then goes down Center Street two blocks,
where it ends in Civic Center Park. Anywhere along that
route is a fine place to watch the parade. Traffic on
University Avenue is restricted so please take public transportation.
The downtown Bart station is on the parade route on Shattuck
Avenue.
Over 75 various organizations participate in the parade,
representing many of the different cultural, political, and
ethnic groups in Berkeley. A few of the groups that participated
in last year's parade were Berkeley Repertory Theater, Berkeley
Opera, Explicit Players, Ginga Brasil, Fashion Police, Berkeley
High Jazz Band, Free Leash Brigade, Wavy Gravy and his pet
fish, and the Tibetan Association of Northern Calif. Caffe
Venezia catapulted giant meatballs onto a huge plate of spaghetti,
pregnant mothers from Birthways marched with synchronized
contractions, a lesbian brigade chanted that all straights
should move to Walnut Creek, and Indian music drifted off
the Ghandi Peace Float.

Teaming up with the Art Car West Fest, the parade last year
hosted over 80 art cars from all over the country! And this
year promises to be even more spectacular.
We are always interested in getting more interesting, irreverent,
funny, provocative participants in the parade. If interested,
please contact John Solomon at (510) 849-4688 or e-mail at
